Diverticulosis or Diverticulitis
Diverticulosis is an acquired condition in which the inner lining of the colon bulges through the outer lining of the colon. These bulges have a thin wall and can become infected. If they are infected they will cause inflammation in the surrounding fat or tissues and cause pain. Diverticulitis is when there is a painful infection.
Typically the infection can be treated with antibiotics over a period of several days. Sometimes, hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics, and bowel rest are needed for a more severe infection. Very severe cases of diverticulitis may require emergency surgery.
For people who have recurrent or particularly severe episodes of diverticulitis, a scheduled operation can be planned to remove the portion of responsible colon. This operation is usually done with laparoscopic assistance, and is quite effective in eliminating further episodes of pain and discomfort from this disease.
