Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
The "Sentinel node" is the first lymph node or nodes that drain the breast, and the first to trap cancer cells if they leave the breast to spread in the lymphatics. By mapping the axilla with lymphoscintigraphy, the sentinel node can be identified at surgery, and removed. If the lymph node or nodes have little or no tumor, then, no further surgery is needed under the arm -- the lymph nodes are likely without any cancerous spread. Occasionally, more lymph nodes may be removed.
